Last week Apple and GE announced a partnership that would bring Predix apps to iOS mobile devices. GE is partnering with Apple to develop mobile apps for industrial operators that will bring analytics from GE’s Predix platform to Apple’s iPads and iPhones. The two companies management teams are claiming the new Predix SDK toolkit due out later this month is designed to create easy-to-use iOS apps that work with Predix IoT data from industrial sensors that will help customers make sense of IoT data. On the surface, this offering might sound compelling. From my humble point of view, I sense a deal that was made primarily to serve two separate proprietary interests – those of GE and Apple. Apple gets to sell 330,000 new iOS devices to a high profile corporate customer. GE receives a nice bump in visibility and awareness for a Predix platform launched over two years ago for third party users. What would be really helpful to know is how this partnership will drive the market for IoT deployments for partners and end user customers? In the end, its only about putting the IoT to work that matters to the marketplace.
