We continually hear about security being of paramount concern with IoT installations. There are those that say that IoT security is the repsonsibiity of chipmakers, device manufacturers, communications equipment suppliers, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. The reality here is that while it may be the responsibility of all the players that participate in building out the ecosystem, security will forever remain a moving target. Just as soon as we think the system is secured and protected is actually when we will become most vulnerable. The following is an excerpt from a piece written awhile back. As you can see, the issues surrounding Internet of Things security are the same today as they were then. The good news is the players involved recognize these issues and have taken action, and will need to stay on guard as threats and attacks will never stop evolving.
“The Internet is still not secure, so we can’t expect IoT to be secure, either. However, security is constantly evolving to meet new challenges, we’ve seen it before, and we’ll see it again, with IoT and subsequent connected technologies.”
